Registration is open for the conference Cooperatives and work integration of disadvantaged persons

30 October 2013 [ English ] français ]

Vulnerable groups and persons with disabilities are more likely to be unemployed than others, increasing risks of poverty and social exclusion. Different types of barriers prevent them from entering and staying on the labour market. In Europe, several thousands cooperatives have as their primary mission to provide employment to disadvantaged workers.

More than just providing jobs, these work integration cooperatives enable disadvantaged workers, through qualifying vocational training and adapted support services, to develop their personal and professional capacities and skills. Thanks to their specific participatory model, cooperatives enable workers to take part in the governance and democratic control of the enterprise, thereby increasing both their empowerment and their economic and social integration.

How do work integration cooperatives meet today’s challenges so that they can be economically sustainable while pursuing their primary mission of integrating disadvantaged groups? The conference "Cooperatives and work integration of disadvantaged persons", co-organized on 25 november by CECOP-CICOPA Europe and Confcooperative-Federsolidarietà, the Italian Federation of Social Cooperatives, will present positive actions put in place by cooperatives in different European countries in order to provide quality employment and qualifying vocational training to persons with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups (long-term unemployed workers, minorities, migrant workers, ex-addicted persons etc). Laszlo Andor, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion will give a keynote speech at the end of the conference.
