CECOP-CICOPA Europe, together with the other European cooperative organisations, launched today the United Nations International Year of Cooperatives at EU level in the presence of Pervenche Berès, Chair of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament and Luis Manuel Capoulas Santos, Member of the European Parliament and several representatives of the cooperative movement.
On this occasion, Pervenche Berès underlined that the objectives of cooperatives in terms of employment contrast the “short-term measures that have been responsible for the crisis". She also highlighted the modernity of cooperatives and hopes it will be recognized as such during this International Year. During the press conference, CECOP-CICOPA Europe insisted on the long-term characteristic of jobs in cooperatives and the wealth they created in their territory. Cooperatives from its network have generally been more resilient to the crisis than conventional enterprises, which is a good indicator of their capacity to sustain their economic activities and their jobs.
CECOP-CICOPA Europe also pointed out that its model provides a number of key inspirational elements, which would also benefit other European enterprises, such as its governance model, the whole range of cooperative support institutions and the very nature of social cooperatives focuses on both economic and social added values.
