16 December 2011 [ English ] français ]

On 8th December, the conference “The social economy in the European agenda” was organised by the Social Economy Intergroup of the European Parliament. The aim of the conference was to analyse legal frameworks and support structures necessary for the development of social economy enterprises, as well as their contribution to social innovation. The impact of the European Commissions’ initiative on social business was also analysed.

Bruno Roelants, General Secretary of CECOP took part in the conference as a speaker alongside high-level EU policy makers as the Commissioner in charge of employment, social affairs and inclusion, Laszlo Andor, and various Members of the European Parliament.

In order to illustrate his speech, Commissioner Andor had mentioned a visit he made to the Spanish cooperative group Mondragon (Basque Country). He has hailed the entire “eco system” of support structures and services that the Mondragon group had created for the development of the cooperatives in the group. The Commissioner has underlined that this “eco system” had helped cooperatives from the group to resist the crisis without resorting to redundancies. The Commissioner Andor also mentioned that the success of the Mondragon group had contributed to the development of the whole region.
